The Difference Between Rim Cylinders and Mortise Cylinders

Rim Cylinders vs. Mortise Cylinders

Rim Cylinder Locks:

  • Mounted on the door surface with long screws or bolts.
  • A thin metal tailpiece rotates when you turn the key.
  • Can be converted to Mortise cylinders if needed.
  • Comes in two types: sash locks (with a handle) and deadlocks (without a handle).

Rim cylinders  are often seen in older homes and are known for their decorative, antique designs.

They’re best suited for internal doors like closets and bedrooms but can also provide a bit of charm and security to your main entrances.

Mortise Cylinder Locks:

  • Secured inside a door pocket with a threaded cylinder nut or camshaft.
  • Features a sturdy tailpiece or "cam" that rotates when you turn the key.
  • Requires a door at least 45mm thick.
  • Can be converted to Rim cylinders with a kit.

Mortise locks, known for their durability, are more secure than Rim locks.

They’re often found in historic buildings and are great for keeping your home or business safe.

How to Tell Them Apart

  • Rim Lock:
    • Mounted on the door’s surface.
    • Often has a rectangular shape and uses two bolts.
  • Mortise Lock:
    • Installed inside a door pocket.
    • Features a threaded exterior and a cam.

Both types of locks can be fitted with a sash lock or a deadlock, depending on your needs. Just remember that a Mortise lock requires a thicker door and a precise installation. In short, Rim and Mortise locks are both great for securing your property. The main difference lies in how they're installed and how their tailpieces work. a  Mortise lock is threaded and fits inside the door, while a Rim lock is smooth and attaches to the surface.
